Family Life Center at First United Methodist Church Mocksville Hosts Cancer Survivor Dinner
It’s time once again for our annual Relay for Life and the Cancer Survivor Dinner. These two significant events in June culminate the efforts of the many Davie County volunteers and businesses who have been working hard to raise funds and awareness in the effort to fight back against the dreaded disease.
June 17th, 6:00 PM
The Survivor Dinner to be held on June 17 is in honor of every cancer survivor in Davie County. Chinera Latham, who is organizing this years dinner wants everyone to know we are expecting a fun evening, with entertainment provided by the Lawmen, a delicious meal prepared by Dave Salmon and the United Methodist Men. Relay committee members Teresa Couch and Betty Shultz have worked hard to get goodies and door prizes ready. Survivor T-shirts and sashes will be given out to be worn at the Relay event. Parking is available in front of the Family Life Center and also across the street at FUMC, where golf carts will be available to help those who may need assistance crossing the street.
A survivor is anyone who has ever heard the words “You Have Cancer”
Barbara Basham and Kathy Ellis (co-chairs for the annual Relay event) both agree that everyone involved understands “survivors are the reason we Relay.” A survivor is anyone who has ever heard the words “You have cancer”. And we invite all cancer survivors in the community to attend the Survivor Dinner followed by the Relay For Life on June 25-26.
Davie County survivors are among the millions of folks who are finding their way through the cancer experience and fighting back against the disease. If you are a survivor and haven’t received an invitation to the dinner, please call Barbara Basham at 336-751-1404, or come anyway. Each survivor may bring one guest.
The goal of the Davie County’s Relay teams and thousands of teams across the nation is to create a world where more people survive cancer so they can celebrate another birthday. This year more than 11 million people will be able to do that thanks to the support of millions of dedicated Relay participants. Survivors are the guests of honor at the Relay.
Survivors Are Proof That Cancer Can Be Defeated
The Relay for Life celebration on June 25 will open with the Survivors Lap where survivors lead the way around the track while being honored and applauded by all participants. Being a part of the Survivors Lap allows survivors to celebrate what they’ve overcome while inspiring and motivating their community to fight. Survivors are proof that cancer can be defeated.
Relay for Life Survivor Lap
Relay For Life is also a great way for people to meet other survivors in their own community. In many communities, survivors form their own teams, join the Relay committee, or volunteer for the American Cancer Society in other ways. If you would like to participate in this year’s Survivors Lap or other activities, please join us at the Davie Family YMCA track on June 25. The Survivors Lap will begin at 6PM and Opening Ceremonies will begin immediately after. All survivors are asked to assemble at the YMCA no later than 5:45 to approach the starting line together.
