DavieLEADS Professional Development Provides Lifeline for Teachers During Pandemic

By Jeanna Baxter White When Davie County Schools launched DavieLEADS four years ago, they could not have known that the initiative’s professional development component would provide a lifeline to teachers as a pandemic forced them to quickly adapt to new ways of teaching.      “No one could have been prepared for a pandemic. However, a lot of what we had put into place prior to March 13th through DavieLEADS, like PLC meetings, guided reading, Heggerty, and Letterland, carried us through the spring and laid a foundation for our teachers as they now offer a combination of face-to-face and virtual instruction,” explained […]

Flexible Funding Enables Summer Enrichment for Davie Students

Davie County Students Enjoy Summer Enrichment Camps Thanks to Mebane Foundation By Jeanna Baxter White Sitting cross-legged on the library floor, Madison Sandy carefully examined the blueprint on the iPad in front of her before selecting the corresponding legos to add to her remote control car. Soon the rising 5th-grader was gleefully maneuvering it in a circle in front of her, experiencing that math and science are fun.  Flexible Funding Means the Learning Doesn’t End School may have been out for the summer, but that doesn’t mean that learning in Davie County ended. Mebane Foundation Offers 35 $1,500 Classroom Start-Up Grants to 1st Year Teachers – Grades K-3 Setting up a classroom is expensive, ask any veteran teacher who has spent years scouring thrift shops and yard sales looking for books, educational toys, craft items, and decorations to turn an empty classroom into a warm and inviting environment that fosters learning. Davie County COVID-19 Response Fund to Support Non-Profits on the Front Lines Ten days ago, Davie High Hunger Fighters served students at the high school. The coronavirus (COVID-19) is having a profound effect on our community. These organizations need our help and support to be able to serve our children, families, and the community in these […]

Teacher Collaboration Impacts Classroom Instruction and Student Achievement

By Jeanna Baxter White Every Student Matters William R. Davie Elementary School’s motto is “Every Student Matters, Every Moment Counts!” That sentiment was evident during a recent first-grade PLC meeting as the teachers clarified the next North Carolina ELA (English Language Arts) standard and brainstormed the best way to teach it to their students.
