Get Your Fiber-Art On at Sugar Valley Airport ~ Classes Begin Saturday


sugar-valley-airportSign up Today – Instruction Is Free, Material Fee Only – There is more than meets the eye at Sugar Valley Airport (SVA).  In addition to a wide range of aviation-related activities, SVA is also the home of Sugar Valley Craftsmen, a group of craftsmen with wide-ranging interests and creative activities.

Sugar Valley Craftsmen are pleased to present a series of Fiber Art Classes with Joanna White, Fiber Artist in the Fiber Art Studio located in the Blue Hangar Mezzanine.

Class instruction is offered free of charge.  The cost for the classes represents only a material fee.  Please contact Joanna White at 336-413-2662, jwhite@directapproach.org, to register or Sugar Valley Airport at 336-998-3971.  Registration is on a first come, first serve basis and class size is limited.  All materials for classes will be furnished unless otherwise stated below.

Sugar Valley Airport is becoming a hub of community events all year long.  The 65 acre airport with a 2,400 foot runway and lots of hangar space for rent is situated in a beautiful lakefront setting.  Adjacent to the lake is a Friendship Fire Circle overlooking the lake.   The large fire circle is a center of activity for visitors who use the facility for overnight camping sessions.

Introduction to Silk Painting – Part I and Part II:   Various silk painting techniques and dyes will be explored.  Participants will make samples and paint a scarf of their own design.  Bring your own lunch and beverage.

  • April 19, Saturday – 9am – 2pm (Part I) – $8.00/Material Fee
  • April 26, Saturday – 9am – 2pm (Part II) – $8.00/Material Fee

Knitting with Silk:  Explore a quick way to dye silk to create continuous strips to knit a beautiful one of a kind scarf.   Silk and dye will be provided.  Basic knitting skills of casting on, knitting and binding off are required.  Please bring your own needles, Size 11 – 15. Cost:  25.00/5 hour class/silk & dyes

  • May 3, Saturday:  9 – 2pm (Bring your own lunch and a drink)

Zentangles – The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.  It increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well being. The Zentangle Method is enjoyed all over the world across a wide range of skills, interests and ages. We believe that life is an art form and that our Zentangle Method is an elegant metaphor for deliberate artistry in life.

  • Part 1 – Friday Night, May 9th:  6:30 – 8:30 – $6.00/Material Fee (Introduction to Zentangles)
  • Part II – Friday Night, May 23:  6:30 – 8:30 – $6.00/Material Fee (Exploring Zentangles with Color)

Part III – Magic of Zentangles on Silk – Zentangle patterns can be drawn on silk with wax or resist and then painted to create beautiful one of a kind scarves.

  • Date of workshop to be announced.  Time:  9am – 3pm.  Materials Fee:  $25.00

Nuno Felting on Silk – 2 Day Workshop:  Try a new textile technique that will bring an exciting focus to your art quilt, garment, book or interior decoration.  Combine silk-painting and felting to create nuno-felt scarves, patches or yardage.  Sampling with paints and dyes, silk fabrics and merino fleece quickly progress to project planning and personal color palette work.  Novices welcome.  This is an active class requiring much time on your feet and some upper body strength.  Two day class:  iWe will paint silk and then felt our own hand-painted silk with merino fleece to create one of kind silk scarves.  Cost:  $50.00/Materials fee which includes 2 yards of silk, dyes and fleece

  • June 7, Saturday:  9am – 3p (bring your own lunch and beverage)
  • June 14, Saturday:  9am – 3pm (bring a beverage, lunch and a snack)
