Saturday, July 3rd, 2010 started out like any other summer weekend day at the Bullhole. Sunbathers, swimmers, fishermen and families looking to beat the heat descended on RiverPark at Cooleemee Falls for a family day at the beach. At one point in the early afternoon, it became apparent to all that this was not going to be the average quiet and relaxing day at the park. When a tractor full of rubber ducks appeared, everyone knew that this was going to be a day to remember.
Hundreds of people gathered on the beaches of RiverPark at Cooleemee Falls to witness the Great Bullhole Duck Race of 2010. Ducks had been adopted for $5 each by Davie County residents during June and The Great Bullhole Duck Race was on.
At 3:00 PM sharp, nearly 1,000 rubber ducks began flocking down the Bullhole raceway, cheered on by spectators hoping to win a share of the $400 in cash prizes. In addition to the spectators, duck race volunteers were busy wading in the duck infested waters and shooing on ducks bent on self destruction or those getting lost in the ripples and eddies of the Bullhole raceway.
Winners of the 2010 Great Bullhole Duck Race:
1st Place – Gracia Littauer
2nd Place – Vance Merhoff, MD
3rd Place – Taylor Smith
