Quality and Beauty of Hand-Cast Pewter

Christmas is quickly approaching, but it’s not too late to pick up your “Plowin’ Thru the Holidays” 2015 Davie County commemorative Christmas ornament.  This beautiful hand-crafted pewter ornament will not only add some sparkle to your tree, but would make the perfect gift for your Davie County friends and family.

“Plowin’ Thru the Holidays”
This year’s unique tractor-shape, celebrates our local agriculture heritage and the Piedmont Antique Power Association’s commitment to the community. Ornaments may be purchased for $8.00 at area merchants, banks, Town Hall and the Davie County Chamber of Commerce. Both Town Hall and the Chamber of Commerce will be closed Wednesday through Friday for the Christmas holiday.

“Plowin’ Thru the Holidays” is the 25th is a series of annual ornaments commemorating a landmark, a tradition, or a memory of Davie County. The series began in 1991 with a glass ball ornament depicting the Davie County Courthouse. Local artists created each of the designs and also sold prints. The 2015 ornament was designed and dated by House of Morgan Pewter, owned and operated by Kent and Martha Morgan of Mount Airy, NC, whose pewter ornaments are featured and for purchase from Our State Magazine ©.

House of Morgan Pewter
The Morgan’s interest in pewter occurred after watching craftsmen working in pewter during a visit to Colonial Williamsburg in 1978. They returned home and did quite a bit of research and then tried casting small pewter objects. They are entirely self-taught, with trial and error being their primary teacher. For the first 17 years, this was a part-time adventure. In 1997, Kent resigned his job in accounting from a textile company. Martha retired from teaching English at Mount Airy High School in 2000. They both now work with pewter full time and have exposure throughout the Southeast.  Our State Magazine features their pewter ornaments and some jewelry pieces.

The craft of casting pewter has been around for over 2,000 years.  This art reached its pinnacle in Europe in the eighteenth century.  The House of Morgan continues this tradition by employing the finest craftsmen in Europe and the United States to carve original designs for its detailed Christmas ornaments.  Using these designs with old world distinction, the House of Morgan casts each ornament by hand, maintaining old world tradition and maximizing the detail, quality and beauty of hand cast pewter.
