A Commitment to Connectivity – Bermuda Run’s Blue Heron Trail Now Open

After years of careful planning and preparation, Phase 1 of the much anticipated Blue Heron Trail in Bermuda Run is officially open! Local officials, Bermuda Run residents, and community members celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a walk down the one-mile section of trail. 

The opening of Phase 1, which follows Hwy. 158 from the roundabout to just past Royal Troon Lane, makes a right as the trail proceeds through the Kinderton Tunnel. The pedestrian path will eventually loop the Bahnson ponds at Kinderton and connect to the future Riverwalk Trail. 

“The Blue Heron Trail is a commitment to our community to provide safe and efficient pedestrian networks,” said Bermuda Run Mayor Rick Cross. “The Town and its leaders have communicated and advocated for this project during the past eight years and have worked tirelessly to ensure that Phase 1 and future trails meet the needs and desires of the Bermuda Run community and all who visit.  It is important for us to connect our community, end to end, so residents and visitors can walk, run, or bike throughout our town.  This week’s ribbon cutting and opening of the initial phase of the Blue Heron Trail is just the beginning.  We are already working on future phases, including the opening of the pedestrian bridge over I-40.  We are excited about the future of our community.

Christy Shaffer, chair of the Bermuda Run Community Vision Fund committee, added, “The opening of Phase 1 of the Blue Heron Trail provides neighborhoods in Bermuda Run, separated by I-40, the ability to connect with each other, recreate together, and enjoy fellowship at our Town Center’s green. With many activities, like the Summer Concert Series, Food Truck Friday, and Christmas in the Town of Bermuda Run, the Blue Heron Trail enables walkable access to our Town’s many amenities. Growing a legacy of community is the mission of the Bermuda Run Community Vision Fund committee. We hope this connectivity will bring many enjoyable moments for our residents and those who visit our Town. It’s the start of so much more!” 

Davie Chamber president Caroline Moser commented on the value the Blue Heron Trail offers for tourism in Davie County. “The Blue Heron Trail is undoubtedly a valuable addition to the community of Bermuda Run, enhancing its vibrancy and providing various benefits to both residents and visitors. This trail not only serves as a recreational space for exercise but also facilitates connections to nearby restaurants and local shops, further enriching the experience for those who utilize it. The presence of the Blue Heron Trail contributes to the overall appeal of Davie County, making it an excellent place to live, work, and play.”
