Once again, Davie County High School seniors will enjoy a special in-school musical performance, courtesy of their neighbors at Carolina Bible Camp & Retreat Center.

All Davie County High School students, faculty and staff, and South Davie Middle School students will receive complimentary wristband bands to attend the 8th annual Carolina Bible Camp Bluegrass Festival on Saturday, September 14, 2019. Gates at the camp facility at 1988 Jericho Church Road in Mocksville open to the public at 10:00 a.m. Music concludes at 5:30 p.m.

GRAMMY Award-winning and EMMY-nominated artist Dom Flemons will present a special private seminar and performance at Davie County High School on Friday, September 13, 2019.

Flemons, a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, is known as “The American Songster” for his repertoire of American folklore, ballads and tunes spanning more than 100 years, according to his official biography. He is a “music scholar, historian, record collector, and a multi-instrumentalist” who is considered an “expert player on the Banjo, Fife, Guitar, Harmonica, Jug, Percussion, Quills, and Rhythm Bones.”

In 2018, Flemons released an album titled “Dom Flemons Presents Black Cowboys” on the GRAMMY Award-winning record label Smithsonian Folkways and received a GRAMMY Nomination for “Best Folk Album” at the 61st GRAMMY Awards. This recording is part of the African American Legacy Recordings series, co-produced with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.  Flemons has been included in the 2018 class of American Currents at the Country Music Hall of Fame Exhibit in Nashville, Tennessee.

Flemons was nominated for two EMMYs at the 2018 National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Mid-America Awards for the PBS episode “Songcraft Presents Dom Flemons” and for his song “Good Ole Days” co-written with Ben Arthur. And, Flemons was the first Artist-in-Residence at the “Making American Music Internship Program” at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in the summer of 2018.

He will be joined by Mocksville musicians, married couple Caleb and Sara Davis, the folk duo known as His & Hers, at the Davie County High School performance.

High school sweethearts who met at age 14, Caleb and Sara first found their love for music in church and through singing together in the choir in school.  Caleb played in several bands in college, but after marriage and two beautiful children, he decided that the only person he wanted to play music with anymore was his sweetheart.

His & Hers has been playing as a duo since 2015.  With Caleb on guitar and Sara with an occasional and timely mandolin chop, they perform original songs about family, relationships, and community, along with timeless traditionals and surprising covers that keep the crowd singing along.

His & Hers released their first eponymous album in 2017. They are passionate about their “real world” jobs, where Caleb is a Nurse Manager at Wake Forest Baptist Health and Sara is a Special Education Teacher at Davie County High School.  At their happiest moments, they are husband and wife, mother and father, and His & Hers.

The performances at Davie County High School are not open to the public.

Carolina Bible Camp Bluegrass Festival Hospitality Partner Chick-fil-A of Clemmons is providing gift cards for the entire senior class, as well as refreshments for the performing artists.

Saturday’s festival features food, vendors, a classic car show, free crafts and games at the Kids’ Activities tent sponsored by AGAPE of North Carolina. Also included for kids are special music sessions with instructor Laura Donovan at the Pickers’ Place, a nature walk, Ga Ga ball lessons, and a quiet babies’ Nappin’ Cabin, also sponsored by AGAPE.
