Early Literacy Videos Support Davie County Pre-K Teachers and Families During Pandemic

Once the camera is ready, Stephanie Nelson begins to record another learning video for Davie County’s preschool teachers and the families of children who are learning from home. Nelson, Davie County’s preschool collaborative teacher, was hired with funds from DavieLEADS (Literacy Empowers All in Davie to Succeed), a five-year, $2.5 million grant initiative between Davie County Schools (DCS) and the Mebane Foundation to improve kindergarten readiness and to increase the percentage of students reading proficiently by the end of third grade. Davie County Receives Funding Award for Water Treatment Services in Cooleemee and Mocksville

On Tuesday, February 23, Davie County was notified that it had been selected to receive more than $21 million in funding to expand its Cooleemee Water Treatment Plant, which will replace Mocksville’s Hugh A. Lagle Water Treatment Plant and promote regional cooperation in public services.  The funds for this project were approved at the State Water Infrastructure Authority’s meeting on February 10. Modified Stay-At-Home Order Ends Friday – Other Restrictions Eased

Gov. Roy Cooper announced in a press conference today that the Modified Stay-At-Home Order will end at 5 p.m. this Friday, February 26th.  Changes that come with the easing of the coronavirus restrictions include: No more curfew The gathering limit increases to 25 people indoors and 50 people outdoors Businesses will be able to operate at 50% capacity Bars, taverns, movie theaters, and indoor amusement centers can reopen at 30% capacity with a cap of 250 people. Instead of kicking up their heels, Davie County residents are being challenged to click a link. In lieu of its 10th Annual Hometown Hoedown, Smart Start of Davie County is partnering with the Mebane Foundation to promote early education initiatives in Davie County. In 1976, President Carter officially recognized Black History Month, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”* In celebration of those accomplishments, Davie County Senior Services and the Dorothy Graham family will co-sponsor the annual Black History Month program.
