Rumble strip installation will divert truck traffic onto I-77, U.S. 421; vehicles will take U.S. 64, U.S. 601, U.S. 158

Pavement grooving will divert through traffic onto I-77, U.S. 421; local detours will take vehicles on U.S. 64, U.S. 601 and U.S. 158 around project

The N.C. Department of Transportation will begin overnight closures of one direction of Interstate 40 in Iredell and Davie counties from mile marker 154 (Old Mocksville Road) to mile marker 175 (Pinebrook School Road) starting at 10 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, until 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, weather permitting.

The closures are necessary for crews with APAC Atlantic to complete concrete pavement grooving on sections of the interstate as part of an $8.2 million safety project that includes shoulder work, rumble strips and new pavement markings. The pavement grooving will help improve wet weather driving by reducing the potential for hydroplaning.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed in November.
Crews will break the project down into four phases, working on each phase for four nights. Closures will take place from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday nights through Friday mornings. Work will begin on I-40 East through the project limits, and then switch to I-40 West. During the directional road closures, the opposite direction of I-40 will remain open to traffic.

All motorists are encouraged to use the signed alternate route during the overnight closures to avoid delays and congestion. To utilize the I-40 eastbound alternate route, traffic will exit at Exit 152B, take I-77 North to U.S. 421 South toward Winston-Salem and then return to I-40 in Winston-Salem. For I-40 West traffic, vehicles will take U.S. 421 North at Exit 188 to I-77 South back onto I-40 West. This route will take an estimated 15 minutes longer than if I-40 were entirely open to traffic.

The four sections of I-40, as well as the local vehicular detour routes, are:

  • Exit 154 (Old Mocksville Road to U.S. 64) to Exit 162 (Campground Road). Heading east, vehicles will take Exit 154 (Old Mocksville Road) to U.S. 64 East to Exit 162 back onto I-40. Vehicles heading west will reverse the directions.
  • Exit 162 (Campground Road) to Exit 168 (U.S. 64/Wilkesboro Street). Heading east, vehicles will take Exit 162 to U.S. 64 East to Exit 168 back onto I-40. Vehicles heading west will reverse the directions.
  • Exit 168 (U.S. 64) to Exit 174 (N.C. 158). Heading east, vehicles will take Exit 168 to U.S. 64 East, turn right onto U.S. 64/U.S. 601, left onto U.S. 158, and then left onto Farmington Road (State Road 1410) to Exit 174 back onto I-40. Vehicles heading west will reverse the directions.
  • Exit 174 (Farmington Road to N.C. 158) to Exit 180 (N.C. 801). Heading east, vehicles will take Farmington Road, turn left onto U.S. 158 and left onto N.C. 801 to Exit 180 back onto I-40. Vehicles heading west will reverse the directions.
