The route begins at Mocksville Elementary across from Rich Park and goes through Mocksville and the new Greenway. “Reason Number 28: “We Tell Cold Weather to Take a Hike. The Popsicle 5K in Davie County, North Carolina, an annual fundraiser for local youth projects, lives up to its chilly name. The race is held in February, and festivities include an ice-pop eating contest called the Brain Freeze Challenge.”
Race Day Fun
- Come in your favorite wintery costume. The most crazy/creative Chilly costume will take home a prize!
- Raffle – each registrant will receive a raffle ticket with their race number.
- Brain Freeze Challenge- Eat a popsicle at the beginning, middle, and end of the race.
- ZERO K- sign up the morning of the race if you are there to support a friend but do not want to run. You’ll get a t-shirt (up to the first 300)and coffee and not have to run an inch!
- Fun Run- Kids (10 & under) there with a runner can participate in a short race after the 5K has finished.
- Popsicle Palooza – Eat the most popsicles in 3 minutes to win the prize!
- There will be great food after the race, as well as raffle prize opportunities for participants.
SURF Board ~ Empowering the Young People of Davie County
All proceeds from the Popsicle Run 5K support youth-led projects in Davie County! Organized under the Davie Community Foundation, the SURF (Students Understanding Real Futures) Board is a youth grant making organization for high school aged youth in Davie County. Each year SURF hosts a fundraiser to raise money to grant out in the spring. The proceeds from the Popsicle Run empower young people by supporting their projects through grants from SURF.
SURF Board members seek sponsorships from local Davie County businesses and individuals. Last year the students had a profit of $8,285.57, twenty percent of which was put into their endowment fund to benefit future boards in their grantmaking.
The Board hopes to have a record-breaking year! They were issued a $10K Challenge by Davie Community Foundation President Jane Simpson. They met and exceeded their sponsor goal, and are excited to put that money to work this year.
Funding for Your Youth Led Project
Does your school club have a service project idea, but lack money to get it started? Are you involved in a church youth group that could use a grant to fund an outreach project? You may be eligible for funding from the S.U.R.F. Board Youth Grantmakers.
How to Apply for a Grant
The SURF Board is accepting applications for the 2016 grant cycle. New this year, applications will only be accepted through the online application process. Deadline for submitting a grant request is February 26, 2016 at 11:59 pm.
Projects selected for grant awards must:
- Address general issues that impact the youth of Davie County.
- Involve at least two youth in planning & carrying out the project.
- Have an adult ally (21 or older)

$17,840 Awarded by SURF Board
Over the past four years, the Davie Community Foundation SURF Board has awarded $17,840 to fund Youth Led projects to benefit the youth and children of Davie County.
2012 Grants = $5,300
Davie High Hunger Fighters – $4,000: Provided daily meals for 32 Davie High students for the summer. Food was packaged by the students and confidentially delivered by volunteer teachers.
Davie County Young Filmmakers – $1,300:Purchased an iMac for editing purposes.
2013 Grants = $4,000
Davie County 4-H – Clover Club – $500: Funds purchased puppet show supplies for the club to provide entertaining and educational puppet shows for pre-school and elementary students.
Davie County 4-H – Wardrobe Warriors – $1,000: Funds purchased stylish teen clothes to be donated to A Storehouse for Jesus to be distributed specifically to teens in need in the community. This project aims to help teens in need gain confidence and fit in with their peers.
Davie High Hunger Fighters – Stockings for School – $500: To purchase school supplies to be distributed through the Hunger Fighters program. The program aimed to help replenish school supplies for Davie High students in need mid-way through the year.
Davie High Odyssey of the Mind – $2,000: Funds went to the Davie High team’s registration fees for the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals competition, which the team advanced to after winning at the state level. In May at Michigan State University, the DHS team finished 7th in the world competition!
2014 Grants = $2,610
Davie High STEM Ambassadors – Birthdays in a Box – $960: Funds purchased all of the supplies needed to hold a child’s birthday party. Supplies were assembled in a decorated box and delivered to A Storehouse for Jesus for distribution to 50 needy families with children with upcoming birthdays. Birthday boxes included cake mix, icing, Kool-Aid mix, cups, plates, napkins, utensils, balloons, birthday banner, bubbles, and party favors.
Davie High Hunger Fighters – Stockings for School – $1,650: Funds provided school supplies in Christmas stockings to students at Davie High, Ellis Middle, North Davie Middle, and South Davie Middle Schools. The stockings were intended to replenish school supplies for needy students for the second semester. Stockings were distributed through the Hunger Fighters and Bookbags for Hope programs in the middle and high schools. Project organizers plan to pack 178 stockings for distribution in December 2014.
2015 SURF Grants = $5,930
Bike Safety Project – Garrett Penley and Boy Scout Troop 575 were awarded $1,000 to host a Bike Safety Day at Rich Park in April. The first twenty-five students to sign up received a coupon for a free bike helmet. The day included instruction on the proper use and care of your bicycle, as well as how to mountain bike.
DHS Science Preparedness – Katelyn Sammons, Grace Cain and the Science Olympiad Team at Davie High were awarded $985 to pay for the fee to compete on the State level, and to host a Science Camp for middle school students last summer.
Hopping for Hope – Austin Lowery and Elaina Burr were awarded $585 to create Easter Baskets for the children at the Dragonfly House. These baskets provided comfort, joy, and hope to children who have not experienced much joy or hope in their lives.
Summer Bags for Homeless – Allison Staley and the DHS National Honor Society were awarded $1,500 to create Summer Bags for the Homeless Students in Davie County. There are currently 105 students classified as homeless. The brightly colored bags contained hygiene products and well as some toys and activities to entertain these students during the summer.
Davie Hair Drive – Molly Hartness, Grace Nixon, and the DHS Junior Civitans were awarded $300 for the 2015 Hair Drive to be held at Davie High on May 12th. The hair drive will collect eight inches or more of hair from participants to create wigs for cancer patients.
Stockings for School – Grace Cain and the Davie Hunger Fighters were awarded $1,560 to create stockings filled with school supplies for Middle School and High School Students in Davie County. This is the third year that this project has been funded, and local Guidance Counselors say that it makes a huge difference for these students.
“I have a passion for Youth and Service, and it has truly been a pleasure to serve as the Advisor for this amazing Board of students the past two years,” said SURF Advisor Tami Daniel. “While on the SURF Board, the students learn important life skills, and how to reach out and connect with community business leaders.
We are so appreciative of everyone who has stood beside SURF in making great things happen through the SURF Grants. From Sponsors, Volunteers, Runners, Grantees, Grant Advisors, Friends, and Parents it could not happen without you! SURF says thank you for your support, and we look forward to accomplishing even greater things in the future!” she added.
New SURF Board Members Will be Selected in June
The SURF Board is made up of 21 Davie County High School students. New board members are selected annually in June and interviewed by the current board of students. This year, the Board will be looking for five new members.
