In the first article of a new Davie County history series, Linda H. Barnette traces the origins of the phrase “the goodliest land under the cope of heaven,” first used by English explorers in the late 1500s to describe North Carolina. Early explorer, John Lawson, and others’ writings provide some of the earliest descriptions of the Yadkin Valley and the land that would eventually become Davie County.

As America marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Davie County Blog is launching a special history series that traces the story of Davie County from its earliest beginnings to today. Through articles highlighting Native American communities, early settlers, historic landmarks, notable citizens, and everyday life, the series will explore the people and events that helped shape the county and continue to influence the community we know today.
