“The Goodliest Land”
In the first article of a new Davie County history series, Linda H. Barnette traces the origins of the phrase “the goodliest land under the cope of heaven,” first used by English explorers in the late 1500s to describe North Carolina. Early explorer, John Lawson, and others’ writings provide some of the earliest descriptions of the Yadkin Valley and the land that would eventually become Davie County.
