The wait is over! RiverPark at Cooleemee Falls, known locally as the Bullhole, will reopen this Friday, May 28th, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend!
Last June, the RiverPark executive committee made the difficult decision to close the park after an unprecedented number of visitors resulted in multiple public safety issues including the inability of first responders to quickly access the park.
RiverPark’s board and volunteers worked diligently to prepare the park for reopening and implemented some changes to ensure its efficient operation. The park now also has a full-time manager to see to day-to-day operations. The park also has new hours and will charge for entry in the summer months to supplement operational costs and to help maintain and improve the areas for visitors as they strive to keep it a clean, family-friendly park.
“Grants have recently been approved for updating the restrooms and entrance signs,” said Addison Davis, park president. “We are really looking forward to getting the work done.”

Things To Do
The park features an impressive stone dam, a sandy beach deposited by a flood, and good fishing in the spring and fall. Many bring their bathing suits to swim and “ride” the little rapids. There are scattered picnic tables and benches along its beautiful wooded trails and the big shelter can be rented for larger gatherings. The restrooms are located near the main parking area. Portages are available for canoeing and kayaking.

Park Rules
The Cooleemee website lists a few basic rules designed to keep park patrons safe.
- RiverPark urges its patrons to wear an old pair of tennis shoes in the river to prevent accidents on the granite bedrock bottom, known for its slippery moss. Swimming and water activities are at your own risk—there is no lifeguard on duty.
- No grills or open fires – bring a picnic! We can’t risk a forest fire. Contained grilling is allowed ONLY on permanently installed, park-provided grills at the main shelter.
- No alcohol or drugs are allowed, PERIOD! We don’t even like smoking.
- Keep your pet on a leash
- No glass containers.
- Remember, KEEP IT CLEAN and be thoughtful of others. Good manners are free.
