Building Strong Foundations for the Future

September has been declared Smart Start Month in North Carolina—a time to recognize the critical work the Smart Start Network is doing across our state to support young children and families.

“The first five years of a child’s life are full of big moments—learning, growing, and connecting. These years shape who they become,” said Gena Taylor, executive director of Smart Start of Davie County. “At Smart Start, we truly care about what children, their families, and caregivers need to thrive. It’s a privilege to walk alongside them and be part of a statewide network that’s showing up for every child, in every county, every day.”

A Statewide Network with Local Impact

The Smart Start Network is made up of 75 local non-profit partnerships that work to:

  1. Increase access to and enhance the quality of early care and education.
  2. Collaborate with families to reach their goals through support, education, engagement, and referrals.
  3. Enhance child health and development for children from birth to five years old.

  • Child Care Assistance: Help with the cost of care through Child Care Subsidy.
  • Educator Support: Training and coaching through a preschool coach, a lending library with classroom materials, toys, and books, and teacher wage supplements through WAGE$.
  • Literacy & Early Learning: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Reach Out and Read, and newborn packets at area birthing hospitals.

Investing in What Works

“As we celebrate Smart Start Month, we invite our neighbors to learn more about the services and support available here in our community,” Taylor added. “The programs and partnerships we are building today shape the future of North Carolina’s children, workforce, and economy.”
