Traveler Alert! Weather Postpones I-40 Construction – No Closure This Weekend

I-40 Detour-Map-Davie-CountyWet weather this week has postponed the I-40 construction project and the road will remain open throughout this weekend.

A new concrete overlay is being placed on the riding surface of the I-40 bridge at the Forsyth/Davie County line at mile marker 181 approximately 1 mile west of the Harper Rd. interchange (Exit 182).  On weekends that the road construction occurs, a signed detour will run from the Harper Road exit to highway 158, then to highway 801, then back onto I-40 at Bermuda Run (see map).

Alternate Route

While traffic from the detour is manageable during non peak travel hours, the posted detour has resulted in significant delays during peak travel times.  An alternative route would be to head out of Winston Salem on Highway 421 North taking the Shallowford road exit to Farmington Road and then to Highway 801.   If you take this alternative route, please be especially careful as this route does have some significant bicycle traffic sharing the road.  The alternative route makes for a much more pleasant drive than the posted detour during peak travel hours.   The map below provides details on this alternative route.
