Affordable Ways to Stay Fit

Want to burn calories without burning a hole in your wallet? There are many ways you can stay active independently here in Davie.

Try taking your dog on a longer route for a few days this week. Instead of catching up over food or drinks, invite a friend on a short trail walk this weekend. Hit the trails at Rich Park and Farmington Nature Park, or stroll down for a lake view at The Park at Lake Louise.

If you love healthy competition, check out the Farmington Disc Golf Course at the Farmington Community Center. This professionally designed, 20-hole disc golf course is by donation and offers open greens to more challenging forested terrain that will test your accuracy. The park also offers over two miles of mountain bike trails to get your heart pumping and adrenaline levels up.

Pick up a jump rope or resistance bands in your backyard for at-home ways to stay fit. Plenty of free workout tutorials and programs are available to stream online.

For Kids

It’s never too early to develop a passion for exercise. Exercise is a terrific way for kids to make friends and burn off their energy after being cooped up in a classroom all day. Sports programming can boost their self-confidence and help them develop necessary social skills while having fun.

Here in Davie County, the Advance Dance studio offers quality dance instruction to children and youth. If your kid loves to tumble or just has extra energy they need to burn off, check out Infinity Elite Athletics. Whether looking to improve flexibility or jumps and stunts, this cheerleading and tumbling gym offers introductory courses, summer camps, and competitive cheer team training.

At Tru Taekwondo, developing a child’s self-esteem and kindness is just as important as refining their punching and kicking techniques.

For Seniors

The benefits of staying active are undeniable, but its importance becomes even more compelling as we age. Regular exercise develops muscle strength and helps prevent bone loss, keeping seniors independent in their daily activities. Exercise also keeps us sharp in our old age, combatting both heart disease and dementia.

If exercise hasn’t yet been an integral part of your routine, dancing is a fun and easy way to get moving! Davie County Senior Services provides ongoing dance classes at the health and fitness center at the Brock Recreation Center and Gym. Various line dancing classes cater to different interests and skill levels and are open to adults aged 55 and older:

  • Social Line Dancing – Tuesdays – 9:45 – 10:45 a.m.
  • Level 1 Line Dancing – Tuesdays & Thursdays – 8:45 – 9:45 a.m.
  • Level 2 Line Dancing – Wednesdays & Thursdays – 9:45 – 10:45 a.m.

If you’re not one for dancing, check out other Senior Services exercise classes at the Brock:
