on November 6, 2024

In every corner of our community, Veterans stand as living reminders of dedication, resilience, and sacrifice. They are our parents, children, grandparents, friends, neighbors, and colleagues—each having served with courage to protect the freedoms we cherish. This November, Davie County will honor these heroes through a range of meaningful events and gatherings, inviting everyone to join in appreciation and respect for those who have served in the U.S. armed forces.

“For many years, our dear friend and local attorney, Lynne Hicks, made sure that there was a service to honor our Veterans. Our kids grew up going to and participating in the service, and we have many family members who have served our nation, so preserving this tradition was important to us. We hope the community will come out to share their support with our veterans,” said Carl Lambert, owner of Lambert Funeral Home.

Lambert Funeral Home is located at 635 Wilkesboro Street, Mocksville.

Shine a Light for Our Heroes: Join Davie County in “Operation Green Light” to Support Local Veterans!

This November, let’s show our veterans that we stand with them. Davie County Veterans Services invites everyone to participate in “Operation Green Light,” a simple yet powerful gesture that speaks volumes. All it takes is swapping one light bulb in your home for a green one. Choose a spot that shines brightly—think porch lights, landscape lighting, or interior lamps visible from the outside—and let it glow green as a beacon of appreciation.

What is Operation Green Light?
This national movement, spearheaded by the National Association of Counties (NACo), is dedicated to honoring our Veterans, raising awareness of the unique challenges they face, and connecting them with crucial resources at the county, state, and federal levels. It’s a reminder that Veterans are not only remembered but supported in every community.

Get Your Green Light Locally!
Davie County Veterans Services has partnered with local businesses to make it easy to participate. Visit Caudell Lumber in Mocksville, Heritage True Value Hardware in Cooleemee, or Steelman’s Ace Hardware in Bermuda Run to pick up your green bulb.

The Origins of Veterans Day

Veterans Day began as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, marking the first anniversary of World War I’s end. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution establishing it as an annual observance, and in 1938, November 11 became a national holiday. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially renamed the holiday Veterans Day, broadening its scope to honor all U.S. Veterans.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs highlights that while Memorial Day pays tribute to fallen soldiers, Veterans Day is dedicated to showing gratitude to all Veterans, particularly those still living, who served honorably during war or peacetime.
