“Twas the Night Before Bed Race” and all through the town,
were a series of teams wishing the flag would go down;
More rapid than eagles the race beds they came,
And the crowds whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
Now Manna Movers! Now Snoozers! Now WXII!
On Magic Elves! On Skills USA! On Flash CW! On Premier Reindeer!

The town of Mocksville raced into the Christmas season on November 17th with the 6th Annual “Twas the Night Before” Bed Race as 18 race teams made the mad dash down Main Street.

Thank you to Ed Simmons for the awesome photos!

Mocksville Mayor Will Marklin kicked off the night mentioning the construction of the park and new facilities in town. The Race saw another good turnout this year with the streets full of families, fun and holiday spirit. Volunteers passed out noisemakers and t-shirts and between races the DJ had folks dancing in the streets. All the racing and dancing made people hungry enough that both food trucks in attendance, Michael Burton’s Smoke Wagon and the Davie High Band Boosters, completely sold out of food.

The event was covered by two news stations, WXII 12 and affiliate CW 20, whose racing teams faced off in the first race of the night. Both stations, hopeful to win it all, stacked their racing teams with track stars from the Davie War Eagles cross country track team. However, this year’s competition was stiff and the secret to winning may have been to have “missile” in the team name.

$600 in Cash Prizes at Stake!
The fastest team, Cathy Riddle Missile,  took home a cool $200 in cash, while the runner-up, Krazy Legs Missile, collected $125. Skills USA, the third-place finisher, rolled away with $75. Yesterday’s Kids, the only senior team to enter this year’s race, handily won the $100 prize for the fastest senior team. Krazy Legs Missile, the 2nd place team also won the $50 prize for being the Most Outrageous.  A Total Package prize of $50 went to the Surf USA team for having the best overall appearance and combination of bed decoration, message, and costumes.

Special Thanks
Tami Langdon, Mocksville’s community development coordinator,  is grateful to everyone who pitched in to make the event a great success. “Kudos and thanks to Event Organizer Denise Hendrix and her daughter Jordan who manages the Facebook page, Mike West and the Davie Public Works for lights, equipment, and course setup, volunteers from the Davie County Early College, Trailers of the East Coast for the event trailer (and for bringing 2 teamsagain this year), and the Mocksville Police Department.

Hometown Christmas Parade
The “Twas the Night Before” Bed Race, which kicked off the holiday spirit, was followed by the annual Hometown Christmas Parade. The “It’s a 50’s Christmas” themed parade featured everything from walking groups, performers, horseback riders, single vehicles to full-blown floats, candy for the kids, and of course, Santa Claus.

Congratulations to this year’s Hometown Christmas Parade winners:
1st Place:  Girl Scout Troops 2580 & 2417
2nd Place: Davie Co. Public Library – FOL
3rd Place:  Spotlight Dance Company
Honorable Mention:  Total Real Estate LLC

The Davie County Chamber of Commerce would like to extend a big thank you to all of those who participated in this year’s Hometown Christmas Parade and to all the volunteers who helped make this a safe and enjoyable event for Davie County. Special thank yous to our judges who helped decide the best entries in the parade and to our Grand Marshal, The Fire Departments of Davie County, led by the Mocksville Fire Department, who also escorted Santa down Main Street.

We wish everyone a happy and healthy 2017 Christmas Season – We’ll see you at the bed races in 2018!
