Philanthropy Phyllis spent the month of December learning about the IGNITE DAVIE College Promise. She also took time to meet many of the local businesses who support the program. She now understands what a wonderful benefit the Promise offers to any resident of Davie County who attends school in the county. Philanthropy Phyllis plans to take advantage of the IGNITE DAVIE College Promise after graduation and start school at Davidson-Davie Community College in Fall 2024. The IGNITE DAVIE College Promise program is significantly impacting local students’ lives, providing them with the opportunity to pursue higher education and successful careers. Two shining examples of the program’s success are Antonia Montano and Hannah Morgan, who earned their Dental Assistant accreditation through the IGNITE DAVIE program at Davidson-Davie Community College (DDCC). The signs tell the story. Gildan is hiring, Comfort Built is hiring, Ashley Furniture is hiring… and the list goes on. Over the past several years, business and industry have struggled to find a skilled workforce to meet their needs. The 2020 pandemic only worsened the challenges, and the lack of skilled workers to fill open positions is even greater today. Estimates for residents 25-years-old and older in 2019 showed that 42.2% have a high school diploma or less and 21.3% have some college but no degree. Logan Ballou-Tomel wants to be a surgical technologist. He spent this summer studying and learning as much as possible about the procedures, tools, conduct, and other aspects of surgical technology before beginning the program at Davidson-Davie Community College this fall. Tony and Vi Golding are “golden” for Davie County! The couple has generously agreed to match up to $125,000 in gifts to IGNITE DAVIE made by December 31, 2020; potentially adding a combined total of $250,000 to the IGNITE DAVIE endowment! IGNITE DAVIE is a College Promise Program that invests in the students of Davie County.
